, i had the best CD
day of the year yesterday! got my friend Basil's 'Quantum', which I came across by chance at Kim's after having purchased a used copy of the third Os Mutantes album
in its original Polydor CD edition at Other Music. I was happy to see 'Quantum', after JOSH
nicely informed us of its existence, and at 11.99 i just couldn't resist. ditto the live Fennesz album, cos I always did want a live album of his and I finally got what I wanted, although it was pricier. next, looking up from where I found 'Quantum', my gaze alighted upon a marvelous surprise, compounding my music purchasing joy: the new Ween album, 'Quebec'
. All four are splendid and i don't think i can remember a better walkaround afterwork CD time. Needless to say, these discs will provide good times this weekend as I leave with a troupe of NYRB
types to a summer cabin in Vermont.
Elsewhere, Thom thanks for the John Stuart Mill link, 'On Liberty' is indeed a good read, but Stoicism is right there at the base
of rationality, a true Western precursor to the rationality espoused by Mr. Mill. Which is to say, his articulation of the condition of which I wrote is indebted somewhat to the Stoics. There's a passage I can quote to that effect but it's not on hand at the moment. I'll put it up later.
