I ran into this documentary on the NBA Channel yesterday, and it blew my mind. Some of the archival footage of NBA from the 1979-1986 seasons was downright scintillating!! There is a lost world in the history of the NBA in the early 80's. A periods that was after Doctor J's 70's and before Jordan's 80's, there was the 1979-80 and 1980-81 season, and the story of those seasons cannot be told without first knowing about Micheal Ray Richardson. Sure Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were the true stars of the early 80's, but no story is ever complete without an honest portrayal of the people who time forgot. This is especially true in the NBA where the lesser known players are the dudes who really make it so special. World B. Free!?? Otis Birdsong!?? Yes, they both make appearances. I am telling you, this was a high point in my time spent near a television set. The NBA is one of the purest blood-lines through which a person can come to understand the last 50 years of history of our nation.
